GMB stops the loss of Community Day Nursery jobs

      15 June 2010

In January this year Birmingham City Council threatened the loss of 1,300 jobs when they issued a Section 188 notice of risk of redundancy. This was accompanied with a proposal to close all Community Day Nurseries, the Youth Service and Commissioning across the city.

Tony Hughes, GMB branch secretary said, "GMB members have been successful in stopping the loss of the Community Day Nursery jobs following extensive talks with Birmingham City Council. GMB members put together petitions, wrote to MP's and local councillors with detailed evidence in relation to the needs of the children of Birmingham and the impact of the proposed job cuts on them. There will now be no redundancies in the Community Day Nurseries and the Section 188 notice has now been removed.

We will hold more talks with Birmingham City Council on its future budget plans. The council saw an increase in their budget from central government in this year's settlement, however, they still cut millions from the departments, to off-set debts they had run up though poor leadership."
