GMB says Tory policies ensure poverty in retirement for workers

23 April 2010

Britain needs a government that will make employers pay a fair contribution to their workers' retirements not one dedicated to the interests of business at the expense of society

Responding to last night's leaders' debate, GMB pension experts said, "The message of Tory plans for our retirement is clear. Tax breaks for the rich in their manifesto while concern for the majority whom in reality they would deny a safe and secure retirement. Their manifesto is at pains to protect the independently wealthy leaving hard working savers throughout the economy at the mercy of Tory spending cuts.

The systemic dismantling of local services for older people that Tory policies generate in some 'flagship' councils will be replicated across the country under a Tory government. Restoration of the earnings link to the basic state pension 20 years after they cut it is not going to compensate for the catastrophic attacks on occupational pension schemes Cameron and Osborne intend to introduce.
