Press Release
Figures show urgent need to invest in early intervention
30 September 2010
In response to the Department for Education figures published today for referrals, assessments and children and young people who are subject to a child protection plan, Shaun Kelly, Head of Safeguarding at Action for Children says:
“These figures reinforce the urgent need for government to recognise the value of early intervention services and invest in them, so that families get the support they need early on, preventing their situations from declining to a stage whereby their children get taken into care. This approach leads both to better outcomes for children and to financial savings.
“As experts in this field, we know there needs to be a new settlement to enable local children’s services to embed early intervention, increase efficiency and break cycles of deprivation and neglect in the UK.
“A multi-agency approach that sees professionals working together is also crucial to safeguarding the most vulnerable children. Only then can we truly keep children safe from harm and hope to see these figures decline.”
