Press Release
Federation response to Hutton pensions review
10 March 2011
Responding to the Hutton Review of pensions published today, Simon Reed, Vice-Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:
"This is a further kick in the teeth for police officers. In a matter of weeks we have been told we'll face a two-year pay freeze, the Winsor Report which may see officers losing thousands of pounds per annum and now this.
"Does this government really want a Dad's Army of policing? Whilst experience counts, the dangers for the public of sending in 60-year old police officers to deal with public order situations and Friday night drunken brawls seems obvious.
"We have yet to meet with the Home Office to discuss the specifics of what officers will be expected to pay, but let's not forget we already had changes to the police pension scheme in 2006. To that end, officers are already expected to work longer and receive less."

So let me get this straight. I signed up for a 30 year career at the age of 20, I've done 10 years and I've still got another 30 to go???? oh, and pay much more for the privilege out of hugely reduced pay packet??? It's a good job my wife is not also in the police, oops, I forgot, she is. Double joy!!!! still at least the scum of our society will continue to get supported by us mugs slogging it out in the hope we may be able to one day put our feet up. I am so ####ing angry at this and its only a proposal from a review. If this actually gets implemented I will go proper crazy mental!

This government seems to forget many families have both earners within the police.
Me and my husband are already looking at losing 200 pounds permonth with the Winsor review. I will lose child benefit. We both face increased national insurance premiums and increased pension contributions. As an Inspector I regularly work 50 hours in my primary role and cover area shifts as well. So petrol has had a big impact on us. Now about 400 per month pounds
I recognise the need for change I am not resistant to some changes. But all at once will cripple my family.

For goodness sake Police Federation, have a stronger argument than this silly little comment. The Federation have let us down time and time again over the years when we needed a strong voice. This time, put all your efforts into fighting our corner and leave no option out to ensure we collectively challenge the government's attack on our service. Inappropriate and inaccurate media releases, unfounded attacks on our professionalism and unable to use industrial rights.
This time, earn the money I have been paying for over 20 years and save me from the financial nightmare I am facing having made decisions based on expected retirement in 9 years time. Get a grip.

How many other public sector workers can be expected to work for 30 minutes after normal hours for nothing how many people would intervene when a crime is being committed, how many public sector workers have the restrictions on thier private life like the police, the role of a police officer in the year 2011 is non specific yes our priority is to protect life and property but in todays service we are when required parents, teachers, marrige guidence councillors and social workers to name a few.
There is no job that I can think of quite like the office of constable if we stop and think about what can be required of us at the drop of a hat......the responsibilty is immence, it's a shame I feel so undervalued right now and I can't see it getting any better. I joined the police and looked at all the benefits, the attractive pension was one of my considerations before I made my decision.
