CWU response to Consumer Focus report on Post Office locals

1 April 2011

The Communication Workers Union says that today's (Friday) Consumer Focus report into Post Office Locals rings alarm bells for jobs, services and the future of the network and comments “there's no point in extending opening hours if there are no services to provide.”

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: “The postal watchdog has exposed the downgrading of the post office network in their report. It's clear that providing post offices on the cheap means downgrading services, even to the extent that posting parcels is not available.

“Locals are failing. Government and the Post Office need to listen to customers about what works and what doesn't. We're told that financial services will play a growing role in Post Office revenue, but Locals clearly can't deliver that.

“While customers welcome extended opening hours, there's little point in offering them if the office can't provide services which people want to use.”
