Comment on DCIS treatments
8 December 2010
The Lancet have published some research looking at the possible benefits of radiotherapy and tamoxifen in preventing DCIS from returning in breast cancer patients.
Dr Sarah Rawlings, Head of Policy at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said:
"This study confirms existing research which shows that radiotherapy can have a positive effect in patients diagnosed with DCIS in reducing recurrence and new cases of breast cancer. The study also suggests a beneficial role for tamoxifen in preventing DCIS from returning.
It is important to note that it is currently not possible to accurately predict which cases of DCIS will recur or progress to invasive disease and the effects of treatment may vary between patients. We recommend that anyone concerned about their treatment options should speak to their doctor."
