Press Release
Charity seeking views on childcare needs for disabled children
10 January 2011
A leading charity is seeking the views of parents of disabled children in Nottingham to discover ways to improve their access to childcare.
Action for Children, in partnership with Nottingham City Council, is undertaking a survey to find out what barriers parents face when organising childcare for youngsters with disabilities and special needs.
Researcher Judy Hardman, who is coordinating the survey for Action for Children, is urging parents to take part in the survey so an accurate assessment of childcare needs in Nottingham can be made.
She said: “From the discussions I have had so far, it appears that as children get older, it is more difficult to find suitable childcare if they have special educational needs. Most childcare is designed for younger children, but teenagers with physical and learning disabilities or behavioural difficulties need to be looked after too.
“It seems to be a real challenge finding somewhere that can offer the activities teenagers want, combined with the level of support that these young people need. Also, there may be other age groups or particular areas of Nottingham where there is a real gap in services - and if so, we want to know about them.”
The survey aims to find out whether there is enough information for parents, if there is enough childcare of the right sort in the right places in the city as well as trying to find out if staff have the right skills to support the children and young people properly.
Parents have the chance to enter a free prize draw for a family day out by completely the survey by 21 January at www.surveymonkey.com/s/5JGB8HD.
Action for Children will report on its findings and make recommendations on overcoming barriers to access to childcare for disabled children in March 2011.
