Chance UK calls for early intervention approach from coalition

Early intervention children's charity Chance UK responds to the coalition government's programme for government, calling for more early intervention to tackle crime.

The Liberal Conservative coalition published its plans for criminal justice today, which include a "rehabilitation revolution" that will pay independent providers to reduce reoffending.

"Reducing reoffending is an important part of the overall crime reduction strategy and it's good that the government address it," said Chief Executive Gracia McGrath O.B.E., "but intervening when a child is showing the warning signs of criminal behaviour later in life is even more crucial. Not only are projects like Chance UK's more effective and easier than later interventions, they are also significantly cheaper."

"We call on the coalition government to seek input from organisations like Chance UK with the expertise and experience in early intervention to ensure that this vital strategy of reducing crime in a recession is not overlooked."

Chance UK provides volunteer mentors for primary-aged children with behavioural difficulties at risk of developing anti-social and criminal behaviour across the UK.
