Press Release
Cash avaliable to save LuDun, says GMB
27 December 2010
GMB is calling on Luton Council and Central Bedfordshire Council to use their reserves which amount jointly to over £37million to keep the LuDun sheltered workshop in Funstable open and save the 24 jobs of adults with disabilities that are currently under threat. The Council's own estimate is that £300,000 is all that is required to keep LuDun open.
LuDun works is a sheltered workshop based in Dunstable where 24 adults with disabilities are employed in picture framing, logistics and milling activities. This service was originally established in 1956 to provide training, accommodation and other services and facilities for people with disability or learning disabilities who were incapable in obtaining normal employment. It is jointly funded with Luton Borough Council and receives support from DWP.
Warren Kenny, GMB Senior Organiser said, "The Council's own estimate is that a mere £300,000 would be saved from closing the LuDun operation. Surely there will be little argument from any part of either Luton Council or Cetnral Bedforshire Council about the benefit of using a tiny proportion of their reserves to save this wonderful project that gives so much for so little to disbaled workers.
GMB is supporting the staff and families of LuDun and is saying to the Council 'Use the reserves to save Ludun'. GMB is ready, willing and able to bring the LuDun 24 to any Council Office to hear personally when the money will be made availbale to save LuDun."
