Budget 2011: Focus on economic growth for legal sector
24 March 2011
Responding to yesterday's Budget announcement, the Law Society has welcomed a renewed focus on economic growth for the legal sector.
Law Society President Linda Lee said legal professional services make an important contribution to the UK economy .
"Law firms are a vital part of the UK economy and the benefit to business and to the public of a trusted and thriving legal services sector is immeasurable.
"They also contribute to UK GDP, not only through their UK based activity, but through the role they play in helping to attract wider foreign investment and in generating significant export earnings.
"Because of this, we welcome the Government's focus on growth in the budget and hope that it will continue to ensure that issues particularly relevant to professional legal services are taken strongly into account.
"The Society will, in particular, be looking at proposals concerning AML offences, the Services Directive, support for opening markets and supporting London as a dispute resolution centre .
"We'll also examine the proposed changes to the planning system, the immigration rules and the continuing focus on Lord Young's recent report on health and safety.
"The Society is keen to ensure that plans to ease burdens on Small and Medium Sized Enterprises are enacted in a proportionate way."
