Age UK statement on todays High Court judgement on adult social care

20 May 2011

Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director at Age UK, says:

“We are greatly relieved that Birmingham Council accepted this decision and will stick with its current funding policy. We agree with Mr Justice Walker that Birmingham's proposed move to only funding those people whose needs were assessed as “critical” was “potentially devastating”. We would go further and say that such a policy is morally wrong. None of us want to live in a society where frail older people are forced to struggle on alone, scared and vulnerable for the last years of their life. There is a moral duty on us all to ensure that this is not allowed to happen and today's judgement has underlined the legal duties of a local authority as well".
