Press Release

ABI appoints Jonathan Davis as new director of investment affairs

29 November 2010

Jonathan Davis has been appointed the new Director of Investment Affairs of the ABI. He will take up the role in January 2011 and will work closely with Alain Dromer, recently appointed Chairman of the ABI’s Investment Committee, to develop and promote the ABI’s point of view across a wide range of financial and economic issues.

Jonathan founded Independent Investor, a specialist website for private investors, and has been closely involved in capital markets for 30 years, including writing regular columns for the national media, most recently for the Financial Times and Spectator. He is currently a non-executive director at Agrifirma Services Ltd, Hargreaves Lansdown plc and Victoria Capital (UK) Ltd and the author of two books on investment.

In his new full-time role, Jonathan will lead a team of 12 people. ABI members have £1.6 trillion invested in assets, including control of 13.4% of investments in the London stock market and £200 billion in Government bonds. He will succeed Peter Montagnon, who left the ABI to join the Financial Reporting Council earlier in 2010.

Jonathan Davis, the ABI’s new Director of Investment Affairs, said:

“The ABI’s Investment Committee has long been one of the main channels of communication between company managements and their institutional investors. It plays a prominent role in representing the interests of long term investors to Government, regulators and the media across a wide range of issues, including the working of capital markets, corporate governance and the regulatory regime. After many years of commenting in the media on the complex and fascinating behaviour of financial markets, and being involved in both startup and established company boards, I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue this important work under the umbrella of the ABI”.

Alain Dromer, Chairman of the ABI Investment Committee, said:

“Jonathan’s experience at board level, coupled with his experience of investor issues, will ensure the ABI continues to work and speak out effectively for its members. There is an extremely busy and diverse agenda for institutional investors, on issues such as corporate governance, changes in the UK and European regulatory framework and financing the recovery. I am pleased that we have appointed someone of Jonathan’s calibre to help shape the ABI’s response in these debates.”

Maggie Craig, ABI acting Director General, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Jonathan to the team. The ABI’s Investment Affairs team is rightly recognised as one of the leading voices for institutional investors. It operates the Institutional Voting Information Service (IVIS), was a key component in developing the FRC’s Stewardship code and is currently working on a Rights Issues Fees Inquiry. I would like to thank Hugh Savill for his effectiveness and dedication as acting Director in overseeing this work for much of 2010.”
