Manufacturing Insight
Manufacturing Insight is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides national leadership in the field of manufacturing awareness and the great opportunities that this diverse sector can offer.
Founded in September 2009, we were established to improve and strengthen the image of manufacturing to demonstrate the scale, creativity and competiveness of the industry by communicating with and inspiring young people (and their influencers) to pursue manufacturing careers choices.
Manufacturing has and continues to be critical to the success of the UK economy. Through globalisation within the different sectors this has led to its transformation from its image of heavy industry to a high value-added and knowledge intensive sector. Manufacturing is a critical element in re-balancing the UK economy.
There is a mismatch between the perception and the reality of working within manufacturing and the sector needs its fair share of the UK’s talent if it is to prosper and grow.
We need to ensure that young people are not being excluded from good opportunities and rewarding careers in manufacturing simply because their parents, or teachers, aren't aware of how much things have changed in the industry.
To do this, we will work with key stakeholders from government, employer organisations, and education partners, the media and press, to facilitate and encourage a joined up approach to support initiatives and raise awareness of the exciting career opportunities available in the sector.
There are two primary misconceptions that we need to transform:
• That the UK no longer has a manufacturing sector
• That manufacturing offers poor career options
We will do this by:
• Improving the perception of the manufacturing sector in national, regional and sectorial press.
• Help young people and their key influencers (parents and teachers) understand the changing face of UK manufacturing and "sell" the industry.
• Reinforce and explain what we mean by a modern UK manufacturing industry and provide link to career options/pathways; we will demonstrate why manufacturing is important in the future.
• We will engage, educate and listen to key stakeholders to encourage them to work with us in delivering our objectives.
