Macular Disease Society
Welcome to our microsite. We hope you find plenty here to interest you.
Half a million people in the UK have a visual impairment because of macular disease.
Most people have what is known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This is the most common cause of sight loss in industrialised nations and the incidence is increasing as the population ages. The treatment for one form, Wet AMD, already takes up more than 1% of the entire NHS drugs budget. And yet, except among eye-care professionals, macular disease remains one of the least known of sight conditions.
Macular disease robs people of their central vision so that they cannot drive, read or recognise people's faces.
We are the specialist support charity for people with all forms of macular disease, dedicated to helping people with macular disease live independent and fulfilled lives. We work to raise awareness of the condition and we fight for better care for patients.
