New President of the IPU elected

The Inter-Parliamentary Union which consists of parliamentarians from 159 countries including Britain has elected a new President.

Mr Abdelwahed Radi, Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, was chosen at the recent IPU Assembly in Bern which was attended by a UK delegation led by Robert Walter MP.

Mr Radi, a former Minister of Justice in Morocco and professor of social psychology, replaced Theo-Ben Gurirab of Namibia who has completed his three- year term as IPU President.

During the 125th Assembly in October, MPs and Peers from the British Group of the IPU met a delegation from Afghanistan led by Mr Mohammad Noor Akbary, a member of the Afghan House of Representatives and Deputy Chairman of the country’s International Affairs Commission.

They also had meetings with delegations from Israel, Palestine, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bahrain.

Other members of the British delegation were: Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans, Ann Clwyd MP, Vice-Chair of BGIPU, Mike Gapes MP, Treasurer of BGIPU, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Lord Judd and Lord Rennard.
