Better Treatments through Research
Breakthrough's vision is for a 'future free from the fear of breast cancer'. To achieve this vision, Breakthrough funds research of the highest quality around three themes:
Early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer:
Develop effective and less intrusive means for the early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer.
Improved and more targeted treatments:
Develop new targeted treatments for specific forms of breast cancer.
Prevention:
Find out how lifestyle, environmental, genetic and hormonal factors contribute and interact to cause breast cancer.
How does Breakthrough fund research?
Breakthrough can only continue to fund its vital work thanks to the donations of its supporters. Our research and that of many other medical charities also relies on the ongoing partnership between charities, universities and the Government.
All of our research programmes and projects, including the 40-year Breakthrough Generations Study, rely on support from the Government's Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF). This funding is used for the infrastructure costs incurred by universities, such as the cost of heating and lighting a laboratory. This collaboration allows more of the money donated to charities by the public to be spent directly on research and is vital to maintaining the UK's world class research environment.
Spending cuts to the CRSF will affect the pace at which new cancer treatments are developed.
