The woman who stabbed Labour MP Stephen Timms in revenge for his vote to authorise the invasion of Iraq has been found guilty of attempted murder.
Roshonara Choudhry stabbed Timms during a consistency surgery in East Ham on May 14 this year.
It is reported that she smiled and pretended to shake hands with the former business minister before stabbing him twice in the stomach.
Timms told the court that he had been "puzzled" by her approach as a Muslim woman dressed as she had been would not normally be willing to shake a mans hand.
"She lunged at me with her right hand," he said. "I think I knew that I had been stabbed although I didn't feel anything and I can't recall actually seeing a knife but I think I said 'She has a knife' or words to that effect.
He added: "I attempted to push away the second lunge but was not successful."
Choudhry, who did not attend court, is said to have become radicalised after watching religious sermons downloaded from the internet.
When asked by police why she had stabbed him twice, Choudhry said: "I was not going to stop until someone made me. I wanted to kill him
She added: "I was going to get revenge for the people of Iraq."
Timms has represented East Ham since 1997 and in 2010 he was re-elected with more than 70 per cent of the vote and a swing against the national trend of nearly 8 per cent with a majority of 27,826, the biggest in the country.
