Public delivers verdict on traditional election night

    27th May 2010

Voting is finally underway today in the delayed Thirsk and Malton poll, three weeks after the rest of the country voted in the general election.

The ballot was delayed in the North Yorkshire constituency from May 6 due to the death in April of Ukip candidate John Boakes.

Despite the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition deal, the delayed election has been bitterly contested by the Tories and the Lib Dems.

Thirsk and Malton is a new constituency, formed from two former Conservative seats, Ryedale and the Vale of York.

The Tories are expected to win comfortably in the seat, candidate Anne McIntosh, whose York constituency was abolished by boundary changes, has a notional majority of 14,687.

Yesterday acting Labour leader Harriet Harman visited the constituency, suggesting that they are hopeful of gaining some ground.

Polling stations will be open from 07:00 until 22:00 on Thursday.

The candidates are John Clark (Liberal Party), Toby Horton (UK Independence Party), Howard Keal (Liberal Democrat), Anne McIntosh (Conservative), Jonathan Roberts (Labour).

Filey betrayed at the election by being ommitted from the ballot papers, we were led to believe before the delayed election that the Ryedale constituency consisted of Malton, Thirsk, and Filey, made my complaint at the Everon centre when voting 27/05/2010. Filey is not a village but a town and should stand along side Malton and Thirsk. Filey should NOT be in the Ryedale constituency, it looks on the map as if somebody in the boundry commission decided to add us to it as an afterthought, to sum it up in one word disgraceful, Peter Jones.
