The role of the veterinary profession as a 'resource' for parliamentarians has been promoted at a House of Commons reception.
Speaking at the British Veterinary Association (BVA) parliamentary reception, Harvey Locke, the president of the BVA, outlined the issues on which veterinarians can provide policy assistance.
"The BVA is a valuable resource of information and informed opinion on a wide range of animal health and welfare issues, as well as public health matters," Locke said.
He continued: "Veterinary surgeons work in many fields that benefit human and animal health and welfare.
"The BVA has a unique perspective on these issues, because we are informed by our members, who are dealing with these issues on a daily basis."
Locke went on to list matters of specific relevance to the BVA, including dangerous dogs, dog welfare and the welfare of animals at slaughter.
Also speaking at the reception, Neil Parish MP, a member of the environment, food and rural affairs select committee, noted the important role that veterinarians can have in influencing policy decisions.
"We as politicians and legislators have to look at legislation and ensure that it is effective and will deliver better welfare for animals. That is where your expertise as vets is absolutely essential to parliamentarians to assist us in making decisions," Parish said.
Attendees at the reception, who included MPs Nic Dakin and John Thurso, were also informed about the recent 'Exercise Silver Birch'.
The exercise, a foot and mouth disease outbreak simulation carried out by Defra, was described by Locke as "vital in showing the veterinary profession's role in safeguarding human and animal health".
