As expected the Conservative Party has won the last remaining contest of the 2010 general election, after the vote in Thirsk and Malton was delayed following the death of a candidate.
Tory candidate Anne McIntosh won the seat with 20,167 votes, ahead of Lib Dem Howard Keal who secured 8,886 votes. The Labour candidate Jonathan Roberts was pushed into third place with 5,169.
The election was postponed from May 6 after the death in April of the UK Independence Party candidate John Boakes last month.
McIntosh was expected to win the seat comfortably, but the rise in Lib Dem votes will be read in some quarters as an indication of support for the coalition government.
The Tory win takes the party's total number of seats in the House of Commons to 307.
Thirsk and Malton is a new constituency made up of wards from both the disappearing Vale of York and Ryedale seats. Both have traditionally been staunchly Conservative.
McIntosh was the MP for Vale of York in the last Parliament, and was a shadow minister for environment, food and rural affairs.
The results were: John Clark (Liberal Party) 1,418; Toby Horton (Ukip) 2,502; Howard Keal (Lib Dem) 8,886; Anne McIntosh (C) 20,167; Jonathan Roberts (Lab) 5,169.
