Speaker attacks Commons security

10th November 2011

Mr Speaker has said security arrangements in the Commons have been "messy, complex and amateurish on many occasions in the past".

In a speech to the press gallery, Speaker Bercow said his preference is for a new head of security for the whole Palace.

At present the Serjeant at Arms is responsible for Commons security. Jill Pay retired from the role last month after an independent report condemned the security arrangements put in place when James and Rupert Murdoch gave evidence to the culture select committee in July.

Murdoch senior was attacked with a foam pie by a member of the audience.

Speaker Bercow said in the past a lack of co-ordination was "a real blot on our copy book".

"I see a strong case for change," he told the press, but said it is ultimately a matter for the House of Commons commission and the Lords authorities.

He pointed out that several select committee reports stretching back to 2004 have called for an overall head of security for both the Commons and the Lords.
