Rise in police weapons use

There has been a 17.5 per cent increase in the number of occasions on which police officers have used their firearms.

In 2007/08 permission was given to use firearms in 21,181 operations in England and Wales.

There were seven occasions in which a weapon was fired, up from three incidents in 2006/07.

The figures were released to Parliament by police minister Vernon Coaker.
