The Queen’s expenditure for 2009-10 has decreased by 12.2 per cent in real terms compared to the previous year.

According to Buckingham Palace figures published today, spending has fallen due to the reduction in commercial charter flights and a refund of lease rentals. This decrease in spending has fallen steadily since 2001, 17 per cent in real terms.

Royal expenditure is the official expenditure relating to The Queen's duties as Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth and is met from public funds. In exchange the Queen surrenders the revenue from the Crown Estate.

The Queen's £7.9m civil list payment was frozen in the Coalition's emergency Budget last month.
