Osborne reveals Budget date

4th November 2010

George Osborne has announced the next Budget will be held on 23 March next year.

The chancellor revealed the date as he defended his Comprehensive Spending Review in front of the Commons Treasury committee this morning.

Osborne held a so-called "emergency Budget" in June, just after the formation of the coalition government.

He told MPs on the committee: "you can put that in your diary".

Under the previous government the Budget date was often kept secret until much nearer the time.
