Lord Butler of Brockwell writes for ePolitix.com ahead of his oral question asking for a Barclays bicycle docking station within the Parliamentary Estate
On Wednesday October 27, I have a question for oral answer in the House of Lords, asking whether a Barclays bicycle docking station can be provided within the precincts of the House.
The Barclays bicycle scheme is already a great success and the subscribers include my wife and myself. I am a keen cyclist and normally use my own bicycle to go to the House, as do many other Members and staff. One advantage of a Barclays bicycle is that you can use it for one-way journeys and, after leaving it in a docking station, you do not have to worry further about its security.
At present, the nearest docking station to Parliament is in Smith Square, the best part of ten minutes' walk from the House. I understand that Transport for London would be willing to provide a more convenient facility for Members and staff of Parliament if a suitable site can be found. I hope that any practical problems can be resolved and a way can be found to make it easier for parliamentarians to have access to a facility which so many Londoners are finding useful and enjoyable.
