The president of the United States will address both Houses of Parliament during his state visit to the UK in May.

Barack Obama will be given the rare honour of speaking in Wesminster Hall.

The event has been confirmed by Mr Speaker's office.

It expected the 44th president of the United States will greeted by Mr Speaker and the Lord Speaker on his arrival.

Obama accepted an invitation from The Queen to pay a state visit to the United Kingdom from May 24 to May 26.

The president will be accompanied by Mrs Obama and will stay at Buckingham Palace.

The choice of Westminster Hall for his speech on May 25 is highly significant.

Usually only monarchs address both Houses of Parliament here - heads of state are normally received in the Queen's Robing Room or the Royal Gallery.

The Pope became the third foreign leader since the second world war to speak in Westminster Hall in September 2010, following Nelson Mandela in 1996 and Charles de Gaulle in 1960.
