The Speaker of the House of Commons has said "no further action" by him is required over SNP claims that one of their MPs was threatened by a Labour select committee chair.

Ian Davidson, who chairs the Scottish affairs select committee, has issued an apology "if anyone took offence" at remarks he directed at Eilidh Whiteford in a private meeting last week.

Whiteford claimed Davidson threatened to "give her a doing" if she leaked details of the meeting.

"I want to make it clear that I did not threaten anyone and did not intend to threaten anyone," Davidson said.

The SNP's Westminster leader Angus Robertson had raised the matter with the Speaker, while Labour accused the nationalists of "a deliberate attempt to smear the chair of the committee, which brings politics into disrepute".

At the business statement today SNP MP Pete Wishart asked if it is appropriate to threaten a member with "getting a doing" and attacked Davidson's conduct.

Commons leader Sir George Young said that "whatever happened, the chairman has apologised and I think that is the right action for him to take".

After the statement Labour MP Michael Connarty raised Wishart's comments with the Speaker, calling them a "calumny".

He said that since the incident the committee has clarified what happened and "cleared him (Davidson) of any wrongdoing".

"It is not politics, it is abuse of the House," he claimed.

Speaker Bercow said "a member who is planning to denounce the conduct or to impugn the integrity of another member should notify that member in advance".

He added that the matter "is properly the property of the select committee", and Connarty had now "used his point of order to offer his own admonishment".

"I do not think that further action by me at this time is required," he added.

Tory, Lib Dem and Labour members of the committee have said they did not hear any threats made.

Whiteford is still refusing to return to the committee.

"We know now that at least one other member of the committee heard his remarks, and understand that another member passed him a note regarding his comments," she said.

"I am not prepared to be threatened and intimidated, and until Mr Davidson takes responsibility, I will not be returning."
