New intake dominates select committees

New Tory MPs have been elected to more than 80 per cent of the places available to their party on committees.

It was assumed when the rules changed to allow Tory MPs to elect their members of select committees that long-established members would be the winners.

In fact the new MPs dominate the list .

Of the 82 elected yesterday, just 13 were experienced MPs – 84 per cent of Tory select committee members (not chairs) are new members.

However that is 69 out of a new intake of 149.

There are still Tory vacancies on the following committees:

Environmental Audit, Northern Ireland, Procedure, Public Administration, Science and Technology, Scottish Affairs and Welsh Affairs committees.
