MP says no to 'Stratford Hotspur'

A Labour MP has called on David Cameron for his support against Tottenham Hotspur's plans to relocate to the Olympic stadium in east London.

During prime ministers questions, Tottenham MP David Lammy hit out at the Spurs chairman for "putting shareholder value before history" over plans to move the North London club seven miles east to the Stratford site.

The former minister told MPs: "The prime minister will be aware that there are two great football clubs in north London, Tottenham Hotspur and Enfield Town.

"He will also be aware that Spurs are considering moving across London to the east end, to the Olympic park.

"Will he join me, and the Spurs fans who signed a petition entitled 'Say NO to 'Stratford Hotspur'", in urging the Spurs chairman to put the club and its history before shareholder value?"

In response, the prime minister reminded him that he had forgotten to mention North London rivals Arsenal and paid tribute to both teams.

Cameron said that his recent experience had taught him to "stay out of international football management", with reference to England's failed 2018 World Cup bid.

He added: "It is true to say that on the Olympic site there will be a fantastic stadium of which I hope one football club will take advantage."

The online petition against the move from White Hart Lane currently has over 4,000 signatures and is thought to have the support of several of the team's players.

Tottenham are bidding against West Ham to take over the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games.

I for one do not want spurs to move, but I believe Haringey council, needs to do more in helping the club, and are the ones who caused all these problems in the first place.
