Miliband's 'new generation of talent'

Luciana Berger, Rachel Reeves, Gloria de Piero and Gemma Doyle are among the new MPs given frontbench roles by Labour leader Ed Miliband.

Chuka Umunna, elected in May as MP for Streatham, has been appointed PPS to the leader of the opposition.

Miliband, elected leader of the Labour party last month, made the appointments after selecting his shadow cabinet from a field of candidates voted for by the party's MPs.

"I am delighted with Labour's front bench team," he said today.

"I am particularly pleased that I could bring in a new generation of talent, whilst also using the experience of a broad range of Labour MPs.

"This is a team from all parts of the party, which will robustly hold the coalition government to account."

Miliband has appointed more experienced MPs such as Andy Slaughter and Karen Buck, who both held their London seats at the election against the odds, to frontbench roles.

'Retread' MPs Chris Leslie and Stephen Twigg, who were ministers under Tony Blair, have also been given jobs by the leader.
