Ken Livingstone will take on Boris Johnson in 2012 London Mayoral race after winning the Labour selection battle.
Theformer mayor inflicted a heavy defeat on his challenger Oona King, winning 68.8 per cent of the vote compared to the 31.4 per cent securedby the former Labour MP.
Speaking after his victory this morning, Livingston said he would be a mayor that would "stand up for London".
"Today'sdecision by London Labour members signals the start of a campaign tochange London for the better and to protect Londoners from the cuts ofthis government that threaten to wreck lives and push us back intorecession," he said.
"The London election in 2012 will be thechance to send a message to David Cameron and George Osborne that wedon't want devastating cuts to our public services, fewer jobs, anddeclining living standards.
He added: "If you want them out, first vote Boris out."
Livingstonealso focused on the cost of public transport in the capital, which hesaid had risen unfairly under the Conservative administration.
"The choice between me and Boris Johnson could not be clearer, I will protect the fare payer," he said.
"AfterBoris Johnson's unnecessary fare increases that go hand in hand withcuts to investment we needed farer fares. I promise that fares under myadministration will be lower than if Boris Johnson is re-elected"
Theresult means the 2012 election will be a re-run of the 2008 contest, which saw current mayor Boris Johnson kick Livingstone out of CityHall, bringing to and end 8 years of Labour rule in the capital.
Announcing the result, acting Labour leader Harriet Harman said Livingstone would have the backing of the entire party.
Sheadded: "I have no doubt you will win the backing and support ofcommunities across London as you stand up for them as they are faced bythe unfairness of a Tory government and a Tory mayor"
The resultof the ballot of London Labour Party members and affiliatedorganisations including trade unions comes just a day before the winnerof the Labour leadership is announced.
