Parliament votes for cigarette vending machine ban

    16th July 2010

Following revelations that the government is to review legislation introduced by Labour to ban cigarette vending machines from pubs and tobacco displays from retailers, ePolitix.com garners the opinion of Betty McBride, policy director at the British Heart Foundation.

What is you reaction to this news?

The rumours and stories about a possible roll back on the ban of point of sale tobacco displays and cigarette vending machines has taken our breath away.

The coalition government is in danger of looking like King Canute – desperately trying to turn back the tide on vital moves to protect children from the life-threatening dangers of smoking.

And who is asking for this? Not parents. Not the thousands of people who are trying to give up the dreaded weed. It’s the manufacturers who need to addict a hundred thousand new smokers a year to replace those who die or quit.

What would be your one message to government?

Leave well alone – because this is good legislation, and your children and grandchildren will thank you for it.
