The winner of the Glasgow North East by-election took his seat in the House of Commons yesterday.
Labour's Willie Bain took the oath of alliegance to the Queen at the despatch box at the start of Commons business.
A packed House welcomed him with cheers as he entered the chamber for the first time.
He was escorted by Labour MPs John Robertson (Glasgow NW) and Mohammad Sarwar (Glasgow Central).
Labour swept aside an SNP challenge in the Glasgow North East by-election on November 12 to retain the seat left vacant by former Commons Speaker Michael Martin.
Bain won with 12,231 votes - a majority of 8,111 – while the SNP came a distant second with 4,120 votes.
Conservative candidate Ruth Davidson came in third with 1,075 votes, narrowly ahead of the BNP who secured 1,013 votes.
And the Liberal Democrat candidate Eileen Baxendale who secured just 474 votes was pushed into sixth place behind the left wing Solidarity candidate and former MSP Tommy Sheridan, after he won 794 votes.
The victory was met with considerable relief in Downing Street as it is likely to be the last electoral test before the general election.
Turnout was 32.97 per cent, with 20,595 votes being cast.
