By Baroness Massey of Darwen - 14th November 2010
Baroness Massey of Darwen writes for ePolitix.com ahead of her question on educational psychology.
The week of November 15th is anti-bullying week. This may remind us of the significant mental health issues facing some young people. Educational psychology (EP) can improve learning and welfare outcomes for all children, but especially those who are vulnerable. An intervention from a skilled educational psychologist can make a huge difference.
Such a service can help not only children, but parents and professionals working with young people. However, the recruitment of trainees to educational psychology has been frozen for the next academic intake and there is no information about future training commitments.
Questions to the government from my question will include what arrangements will be in place to support EP training in 2011, how will the numbers of educational psychologists be maintained, and how will local authorities be encouraged to ensure that educational psychology services are available to children, parents and professionals.
