DUP 'will work with Labour or Tories'

The Democratic Unionist Party unveiled its manifesto at an event in Belfast this morning.

The DUP had nine MPs in the last parliament, making them the largest Northern Ireland party.

"We want tax-payers' money to deliver the greatest long-term benefits for individuals and society," said DUP leader and first minister of Northern Ireland Peter Robinson.

"Across a range of sectors we are outlining comprehensive proposals for improving the economy, public services and quality of life in the United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland in particular.

"Within the overall UK context we are committed to securing the best deal for the people of Northern Ireland."

Robinson told the BBC his party would work with either Labour or the Tories if there is a hung parliament.

Today the DUP claimed that the UUP's pact with the Conservative party, the SDLP's alliance with Labour and Sinn Fein's policy of not taking its seats in the House of Commons means only the DUP can properly represent the voters.

DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds said:

"People shouldn't waste their vote on parties who are going to be whipped to vote for decisions in Parliament which will be bad for Northern Ireland.

"In every vote the DUP will do what's right for Northern Ireland."

The party has indicated that it will work with Labour or the Conservatives in the event of a hung parliament, as long as their demands are met.
