Commons motion on Cadbury ownership

11th November 2009

Birmingham MPs have tabled a Commons early day motion to keep confectionary manufacturer Cadbury under UK ownership.

Lynne Jones (Lab, Birmingham Selly Oak) said the chocolate maker had a strong legacy in the area with an "emotional commitment" to the firm.

Cadbury has been the subject of a hostile takeover bid by US company Kraft, although the bid had been rejected.

On Monday Jones tabled the early day motion that the Commons "celebrates 230 years of chocolate production in Bournville and hopes that the iconic brands of Cadbury and Bournville will remain in the ownership of an innovative British company, faithful to the principles of its socially responsible founders".

The motion was signed by other local MPs including Birmingham Northfield MP Richard Burden and Liberal Democrat John Hemming, MP for Birmingham Yardley.

The offer from Kraft will now be put to the firm's stakeholders.
