Nick Clegg has been urged to pull the Liberal Democrats out of the coalition by the party's leader in Liverpool.
In an email sent to the deputy prime minister and other MPs, councillor Warren Bradley warned that the party risked being wiped out at the upcoming local elections.
Bradley wrote: "I have, to date, kept my frustrations and criticisms based on policy rather than just having a go because I don't want to be in bed with the Tories.
"Unfortunately the boil is about to come to a head and burst (probably on election night) when we lose some very well respected and experienced colleagues from Liverpool city council."
The email, seen by the Liverpool Echo, goes on to warn that Labour and Trade Unions are "saturating the streets of Liverpool".
"Liberalism started in Liverpool during the late 60s with Sir Trevor Jones and Cyril Carr being the driving force; a ward we have held for many years through thick and thin," he said.
"Sadly this year, because of your actions in coalition government, this may not be the case."
He added: "I and many of my colleagues in Liverpool and the north are tired of defending the indefensible. As a party we have to reconsider what and who we are before we disappear into the annals of history as a political party who promised so much hope, yet failed because they wanted control and power."
But Clegg said he would not abandon the "repair job" the coalition was doing on the country.
He told Sky News: "These are very difficult times and I'm not denying that we have to make controversial decisions, as anybody would who had come into power after the election, because we are cleaning up a terrible mess left behind.
"You can't do it overnight; there is no shortcut, you have to stick to the plan in order to then deliver the jobs, the prosperity, the optimism and the hope that I am absolutely sure is there at the end of this process.
"The worst thing to do in the middle of a repair job is to then abandon it."

Nick Clegg is OK in a few years he will be sat in the House of Lords. Yet he has single handedly destroyed the Lib Dem party. People focus on the pledge he made ref Student Fees but he also pledged - 'A NEW STYLE OF HONEST POLITICS' referring to dishonest politicians etc.
Now we have the vote on AV or First Past the Post - what difference does it make when politicians do not even honour their manifesto pledges ???
Clegg deserves all the flak he gets, he sold his principles to the highest bidder not giving a damn about the grass root activists who worked to get him to a high profile politician status.
The public are sick to the teeth with two faced politicians treating them with contempt.
