    Clegg in the spotlight

    16th August 2010

The deputy prime minister is to take the driving seat today when David Cameron goes on holiday for two weeks.

While the PM remains in charge, Nick Clegg will use his "caretaker" role to highlight the Lib Dem agenda within government.

Today he will hold an online Q&A in central London.

He will answer questions from the audience as well as from questions posted on Twitter.

Cameron is holidaying in Cornwall - his wife Samantha is pregnant and the baby is due in September.

It is thought that the prime minister will take a period of paternity leave after the birth, giving Clegg another opportunity to be the face of the coalition government.

Clegg has already stood in for Cameron at prime minister's questions, when he caused controversy by describing Britain's role in the invasion of Iraq as "illegal".

He later explained he was expressing a personal view.

On Wednesday Clegg is to make a speech on social mobility and on Thursday he will hold another 'town hall meeting'.
