The NASUWT outlines its concerns on the coalition government's approach to education.

The NASUWT has established its Championing Education campaign in response to the creation of the coalition government and the publication of its plans for education and public services.

The NASUWT is committed to defending and protecting state education and public services which are democratically accountable and held and managed in trust for the public.

The union also believes that high quality public services depend on a fully resourced and supported workforce and is opposed to any moves to denigrate the public sector by seeking to reduce pay and pensions or worsen working conditions.

The NASUWT believes that the government's free market ideology poses a serious risk to the public services which the majority of the population relies on and holds dear.

Their plans to create thousands of academy and free schools represent nothing more than a blueprint for the breakup of state education and the NASUWT believes the public are being softened up to accept this scenario through the daily media rhetoric of ‘bloated' public services and ‘gold plated' public sector pensions.

Championing Education aims to raise awareness of the serious consequences of the government's plans, not only among NASUWT members, but also the whole school workforce, parents, governors and the wider community.

The NASUWT has established a dedicated web portal at www.nasuwt.org.uk/championingeducation which is constantly updated with all the latest advice and information on the campaign. Briefing packs for NASUWT members, governors and politicians have been produced setting out the Union's concerns on the government's policies and these have been complimented by oral briefings at both national and local level.

Within Westminster the NASUWT has been actively lobbying Ministers, MPs and Peers. If you would like briefings or any information on any aspect of schools policy or the others areas of work of the NASUWT please get in touch.

The NASUWT is committed to ensuring that all children and young people receive their entitlement to the highest quality education and believes that teachers and headteachers are fundamental to achieving that ambition. As such they need pay levels that reward them as highly skilled professionals and working conditions that enable them to work effectively, focusing on their core role of teaching and leading and managing teaching and learning.

Championing Education aims to ensure that government policies enhance the standing of and provision for the teaching profession rather than dismantle it.
