The BBC's Craig Oliver has been appointed as Downing Street's new communications director.
He will replace the former News of the World editor Andy Coulson who quit No.10 amid continued pressure over the phone hacking scandal.
Oliver is currently responsible for commissioning the content for BBC's Global services in English including the BBC World Service and BBC World.
He has previously held posts as deputy head of the BBC's multimedia newsroom and as editor of the BBC News at Six and News at 10.
He has also worked for ITV News, Channel Five News and Channel 4 News.
Oliver was appointed to role as controller of English, BBC Global News Content, in April 2010.
David Cameron said of his appointment: "I am very pleased that Craig Oliver is to become the new Director of Communications at 10 Downing Street.
"Craig has formidable experience as a broadcast journalist. He will do an excellent job in explaining and communicating the Government's programme."
And Oliver said: "I'm delighted to be joining David Cameron and his team at such an exciting and challenging time.
"It's difficult to leave the BBC after a fascinating few years - but this is an opportunity I can't turn down."
