Awards recognise architectural heritage

21st February 2011

An awards ceremony which recognises innovative architectural contributions to the built environment is making a final call for entries.

The Green Apple Awards 2011 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage were launched in December. Begun in 1994, the Green Apple awards are one of the most respected environmental awards programmes in the world. Green Apple Award winners are recognised for their contribution to the built environment and architectural heritage. The awards give recognition for all steps towards sustainability including design and construction, restoration and regeneration as well as product and service innovation.

The Awards will be presented in the Chairman's Boardroom of the University of Westminster in Regent Street, London on Monday 20th June 2011. This spring the catering at the University of Westminster has been re-launched by celebrity chef, Gary Rhodes.

The Awards will be presented by Trevor Baylis OBE, inventor of the wind-up radio. The environmentally friendly radio is powered by winding a crank rather than using batteries or an external power supply. He invented it in response to the need to communicate information about AIDS to the people of Africa. He now runs Trevor Baylis Brands plc, a company dedicated to helping inventors to develop and protect their ideas and find a route to market.

This year the event is being sponsored by the BRE (Buildings Research Establishment) who are kindly providing one of the judges and hosting the judging at their Innovation Park in Watford. The BRE Innovation Park is a world-leading and ground-breaking demonstration development designed to give a glimpse of how the future delivery of sustainable buildings and communities can be achieved not only in the UK but around the world.

It features ten of the world's most sustainable houses (built to the Code for Sustainable Homes), a health centre of the future, a refurbished Victorian Terrace and over 400 different construction innovations and emerging technologies as well as a state-of-the-art community landscape design. Collectively these projects demonstrate diverse and innovative approaches to sustainable design and construction. They each share the common goal of having a low impact on the environment but a high impact on the quality of life of building and community occupants and CO2 emissions reduction.

Entries are welcome from anyone in the building and construction sector from sole traders to global construction companies as well as individuals and councils including: builders, construction companies, architects and surveyors, restoration specialists, interior designers, property developers, local authorities, traditional building crafts, products and materials suppliers, property services and consultants, housing associations and town planners.

All winners will receive free tickets for the prizegiving ceremony, where they will be presented with an attractive gold, silver or bronze trophy. The highest scorers in each sector will also be named as Green Champions with the top entry chosen as Champion of Champions.

The judges are looking for environmental benefits, social benefits, financial benefits, visual/aesthetic impact, energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, architectural heritage, traditional crafts and skills, minimising environmental disruption, innovation, transferability.

The awards are free to enter and the deadline is 28 February 2011. Entry forms are available online at wwwgreenappleawards.com or from the organisers Milestone Awards on 01494 676436. Winners will be notified in April and will be invited to the prizegiving ceremony at the University of Westminster on 20th June. The Green Apple Awards are an accredited feeder scheme into the European Business Awards for the Environment.

All winners have the opportunity to have their award-winning paper published in The Green Book – the world's only annual work of reference on environmental best practice. The aim is to help others to support the environment. We distribute this digital book globally, to environment professionals, reference libraries, universities, embassies and the media.
