PRESS RELEASE
JULIAN BRAZIER MP TO VISIT SHAW TRUST AT CANTERBURY
24 April 2003
Today, Thursday 24 April at 12 noon, Julian Brazier will visit national disability charity Shaw Trust at its Canterbury site. The Canterbury Centre, managed by Shaw Trust in City Business Park, Marshwood Close, Canterbury provides comprehensive training, vocational rehabilitation and job search opportunities for disabled people out of work. During his visit Mr Brazier will meet disabled people looking for work and those, who with the help of Shaw Trust have secured local jobs. Now celebrating 21 years of operation, Shaw Trust has over 200 projects across the UK that provides training and work opportunities for over 14,000 disabled and disadvantaged people each year.
At Shaw Trust in Canterbury disabled and disadvantaged people can access the skills and confidence training necessary to move into work. Depending on the needs of each individual, the training support can include accredited training from Canterbury College (IT, desk top publishing) and job search through such programmes as WORKSTEP and New Deal for Disabled People.
Lindsay Godley, Shaw Trust Kent Projects Manager says ”Mr Brazier is very welcome to our centre in Canterbury. We provide groundbreaking services to help people find and win the job they want. Starting a new job is never easy, and if you have a disability there could be extra things to think about; so we extend that support to our service-users and their employers, once they are in work. ”
Mr Brazier adds, “As someone with several disabled friends, I am delighted to have the opportunity to visit Shaw Trust and see its work. Most disabled people want the opportunity to work and assisting them with job opportunities is in the interests of the community as a whole as well as the disabled applicant. I particularly support the work of voluntary organisations like Shaw Trust who are often far more effective - and economic - than government agencies in the work they do. “
