Forum Brief: Prince's Trust report

The Prince's Trust has called on ministers to do more to help the one million-plus young people who are not in education, employment or training.

Forum Response: The Prince's Trust

Leslie Morphy, director of programmes and policy, said. "Too many young people fail to turn to anyone for help and support.

"Our biggest-ever consultation with this hardest to reach group shows that they want more opportunities and practical skills to help them into education, employment and training.

"Only by listening to the evolving needs of young people and remaining constantly relevant can we prevent more young people from slipping through the net."

Forum Response: National Youth Agency

Carol Jackson, young adult learners partnership development officer, said: "The NYA welcomes the Prince's Trust report that calls on ministers to do more to help the one million-plus young people who are not in education, employment or training.

"The Getting Connected programme, delivered in partnership by The National Youth Agency and the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, will be aiming to get 9000 young people in England aged 14-25 re-engaged back into education, employment or training, over the next three years.

"Thanks to an award by the Strategic Grants Committee of the Community Fund, Getting Connected will develop a work programme entitled 'Widening participation and improving practice', in order to increase the take up of education, training and employment opportunities by young people by equipping them with the personal and social skills necessary for productive interaction with others in their communities.

"Getting Connected has had a really positive impact on the young learners involved as helps increase self esteem, confidence, awareness of self and others. This extra funding from the Community Fund will allow us to continue this good work and reach more young people, who otherwise, would not have the opportunity to work, learn or train."

Forum Response: Association of Teachers and Lecturers

Gwen Evans, deputy general secretary told ePolitix.com:"Congratulations to the Prince's Trust for paying attention to this extremely hard to reach group. These young people now are the casualties of a results greedy system where schools can find themselves tageting resources on the students who will contribute to their position in the league tables rather than to individuals with complex needs.

"And the young people's concerns about the absence of careers advice are all too real. There are parts of the connexions service that have yet to make the necessary impact. What is disappointing is the limited nature of Douglas Alexander's response which examines the real social policy issues about the need to tackle the sense of hopelessness that is conveyed so clearly in this timely report."

Forum Response: Voice UK

A spokesperson for Voice UK told ePolitix.com: "Voice UK is pleased that the Prince's Trust continues to support disadvantaged young people. The Prince's Trust has supported many young people over the years and their efforts and acheivements are to be applauded.

"At Voice UK we hear from many young people who experience disadvantage simply because they have a learning difficulty. We are hopeful that the Prince's Trust will continue to make concerted efforts to meet the needs of this particularly disadvantaged group of young people.
