McConnell bangs the drum for Scotland
Scotland's first minister has used US "Tartan Day" celebrations to fly the flag for inward investment north of the border.
Addressing students in America, Jack McConnell said Scotland was a progressive, forward looking country keen on extending its links with the US.
"We are one of the most intellectually vibrant nations in the world," he said.
"We have to continually open Scotland up to new people, new ideas. We want to learn from others and let others learn from us.
"We are already a huge importer of students from overseas - and we are the only European country that is trying to attract, and retain, fresh talent."
Open
The first minister said Americans should view Scotland as a country open to those from abroad.
"We want students to come to Scotland and to make the most of our world class education," he told an audience at the University of Columbia.
"And then we want you to stay beyond graduation and to continue enjoying all that we have got to offer - our vibrant culture, our breathtaking scenery, our enviable quality of life - and all the opportunities that will bring you to make the most of your talents and your future."
McConnell also announced that he had met with the leading nationalist Sir Sean Connery during his US trip.
Following high profile clashes between the film star and Labour, McConnell praised the work done by Sir Sean in promoting Scotland abroad.
"We have already been talking today. We are both committed to Scotland. I will work with anybody to promote Scotland anywhere in the world," he said.
"Sean is a great ambassador for the country and I'm sure over the years we will be talking again."
