Gay couples to secure Scots adoption rights
The Scottish executive is poised to overhaul the adoption system to allow gay and unmarried couples to become parents.
The move, which is likely to be announced within weeks, will put the devolved government on a collission course with religious and pro-family groups north of the border.
Under current legislation single gay people can adopt, but couples cannot register a child with their partner.
The move follows a similar change in the law which is set to come into effect in England and Wales.
Justice minister Cathie Jamieson will soon receive a report from adoption experts led by Sherriff Graham Cox.
That study is expected to call for a dramatic overhaul of Scots adoption policy.
The change in approach is said to have the backing of adoption groups including the British Association of Adopting and Fostering.
