Road toll extension 'will split communities'

Steve Norris has stepped up his attack on plans to extend London's congestion charging zone.

Addressing residents in Fulham on Monday, the Conservative mayoral candidate was set to warn against the "huge disruption" the plan would cause.

Mayor Ken Livingstone is currently consulting on whether the zone should be enlarged to cover Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea and Fulham.

Norris said such a move would be "bad for business and residents alike".

"The mayor’s own figures show that extending the congestion charge will cost £120 million with a further £60 million to administer each year and is only likely to make £10 million," he said.

"We know, based on his fanciful projections for the original scheme, that even this £10 million is likely to be an overestimate.

"The proposal will also split the community in half so that those on the wrong side of the road will soon have to pay £5 to take their kids to school, drive to work or get to the local shops."

Norris added that the extension would "cause huge disruption to the surrounding area and will also result in local businesses, restaurants and retailers suffering from the same loss of trade as seen in central London".
