Bevan tops 'greatest Welsh heroes' poll

NHS founder Aneurin Bevan has come top of a poll of the 100 greatest Welsh heroes of all time.

The late Labour politician beat 15th century leader Owain Glyndwr into second place by just 27 votes.

Former prime minister David Lloyd George, who served from 1916 until 1922, finished in eighth place.

Other politicians in the top 10 included Gwynfor Evans, the first Plaid Cymru MP, in fourth place, and the party's founder, Saunders Lewis, at tenth place.

"We are thrilled that so many people took the time and trouble to support their favourites in 100 Welsh heroes," said Allison Coleman, who directed the project for assembly organisation Culturenet Cymru.

"The scale of the response exceeded our wildest expectations. While Anuerin Bevan is a most worthy winner, we don't for a moment believe the outcome of our poll is the last word on the subject.

"In fact, we hope it will fuel further argument and debate. We feel sure, however, that we have succeeded in our aim of raising the profile of Wales internationally and drawing attention to the lives and achievements of a diverse and remarkable collection of people."
