Saville inquiry to end witness evidence

The Bloody Sunday inquiry is expected to finish hearing evidence this week.

The last witness is due to testify at the Guildhall in Londonderry on Thursday, although the closing statement by counsel Christopher Clarke QC is not scheduled until the autumn of this year.

The inquiry, led by Lord Saville of Newdigate, has now been investigating the events of Bloody Sunday for four years. A final report is not expected until at least this time next year.

British Army soldiers shot dead 13 civilians during a civil rights march in Derry on 30 January 1972. A fourteenth person died later.

Prime minister Tony Blair ordered the Saville inquiry in 1998, after a campaign by the families of those killed and injured, who felt the Widgery inquiry held shortly after the incident was insufficient.
