London police stations to be sold off

The Metropolitan Police has announced plans to sell off 60 per cent of its stations.

It is estimated that such a move would generate £900 million revenue, which would be used for investing in more modern "front offices" in new settings such as public libraries and supermarkets.

The aim is to have a "flexible estate that is deployed close to crime 'hot spots'," in line with the home secretary's plans for more community involvement in law enforcement.

Sales of Metropolitan Police properties will be made between 2005 and 2015.

"We have major financial problems with the current estate because of its age," said property services director Alan Croney.

The Metropolitan Police currently has a maintenance backlog totalling £82 million.

Several boroughs have been identified as needing urgent attention, including Waltham Forest and Haringey. In addition, four stations currently being built through the private finance initiative will be closely monitored as a possible model for future investment.

A separate strategy will consider accommodation for police officers.
