Westminster should learn from Wales, says MP

Parliament should learn from the devolved institutions, a senior MP has said.

Speaking as the Commons public administration committee took a fact-finding trip to the Cardiff Bay assembly, chairman Tony Wright argued that Westminster had a "patronising" attitude to the new institutions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

He cited the Welsh ombudsman system as far more advanced than anything done elsewhere in the UK.

"Westminster has a completely arrogant and patronising attitude, on the whole," he said.

"It's about time we did it differently. The fact is, we now have different systems in the UK.

"We have to make mistakes to learn. The problem when things are the same everywhere is that you never learn. We have to try things out and be experimental."

The MPs will visit the Scottish parliament at a later date.
